Absences from school require notification or explanation to the school. Please refer to the information under the heading "Absences" below.
Absences
When children are to be absent from school because of:
- severe illness - the school should be notified in writing to the class teacher as soon as possible,
- holidays - permission from the Principal must be requested in advance.
When children are absent from school for a short period of time a written explanation addressed to the class teacher is required on the child's return. The explanation is recorded in the class roll and the letter filed for a twelve-month period.
If children need to leave the school during class time, a written explanation is required and children must be signed out at the administration office.
Addresses and Change of Address
The school should be notified, in writing, of any change in address and/or telephone numbers of students as soon as possible. Current addresses and telephone numbers are essential.
Class Lists
At the beginning of each year a list of the children in each year is produced and distributed to the families of the children in that year. The list includes each child's name, the names of their parents or guardians, and the address and phone number of the family. The list assists parents who wish to be in contact with the parents of the friends of their children. It is not compulsory to appear on the lists, and anyone who does not wish to be on a list should ask at the office to have their name kept off the lists. These lists are to be treated confidentially.
Communication between school and home
The school communicates with the parents in a variety of ways. It is important that parents regularly check school bags to ensure all information from school is being retrieved.
A weekly newsletter is sent to parents via email each Wednesday (a paper copy can be requested). This is essential reading for parents as it contains reports on school events, parent committee reports, community news and reminders to keep parents up to date with school activities.
Notes from the class teachers and information and permission notes concerning band, sport, excursion and other activities are often sent home in the school bag and may be expected to be returned by a certain date.
Interviews:
A parent information evening is scheduled by each teacher in Term 1.
Formal interview sessions are scheduled during the year, usually in term 2.
Parent requests for interviews with members of staff can be made at a mutually convenient time. Please contact the school to arrange such an interview.
Reports: A portfolio containing examples of the student's work allowing parents to see student progress is sent home at the end of Term 2. Written reports, including samples of the whole year's work by the student, is sent home with each child at end of the year.
Enrolment Policy
The Roseville Public School Enrolment Policy follows the procedures set down by the Department of School Education. Our designated local enrolment area is determined by the Department and shown on maps available from the School office. See the above document for more details.
Learning Support Team
The Learning Support Team coordinates and supports the learning of students with additional needs, including those students experiencing specific learning difficulties; behaviour, social and emotional difficulties; hearing, vision and speech difficulties; students with disabilities receiving State Integration funding; as well as students with gifts and talents. Core membership of this Team includes the Deputy Principal, School Counsellor, Support Teacher (Learning Difficulties), Literacy Support Teacher and class teachers from various grades across the school. The Team meets weekly to discuss referrals received.
The Learning Support Team is also responsible for tracking the progress of all students as they proceed from Kindergarten to Year 6 and for coordinating the School's Literacy Support Program.
School Development Days
Schools are permitted, with the involvement of their parent body, to hold three development days per year on topics related to the education of children within the school. These days should be pupil free so that maximum staff participation is possible. School Development Days occur on the first day of Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3.
Starting School
Starting school is an exciting and challenging event for children. It brings many changes to both child and parent, such as
new environment,
new experiences,
new feelings,
new friends,
first steps in independence,
separation from home and family.
It is reassuring for children if they are familiar with:
Their full name, address, telephone number, parent routines (e.g. mother works Mondays).
Dressing themselves - particularly raincoats, jumpers, shoes and socks. Show your child where you have labeled each item. Please label prominently (remember yellow raincoats, and school bags all look alike).
Completing small tasks that you have specifically allocated.
The expectation that they need to respond to instructions.
School routine - e.g. during the last half of January you could mention matters such as:
Take your child with you to choose the material for a Library bag, lunch box etc.
First Day
Be positive.
Arrive at the time indicated on your enrolment letter - you will receive this prior to the first day.
Leave cheerfully - your child will be settled into an activity by the teacher.
Student Welfare
Discipline
Self discipline is encouraged at all times. However, minor discipline is handled initially by the classroom teacher who may seek assistance from members of the school executive.
Serious or persistent breeches are referred to the Principal or Deputy Principal and are handled at their discretion depending upon the circumstances.
Parents are involved in the disciplinary process only in the event of major misdemeanours.
School Counsellor
Children who are experiencing difficulties in academic, social or emotional areas are referred to the Learning Support Team by the class teacher. Individual assessment may be deemed appropriate. This may be done by the School Counsellor or Support Teacher depending on the circumstances Prior to this the class teacher will have discussed perceived problems with the grade supervisor/Principal. Parents are notified prior to the Counsellor working with a child. Follow-up meetings are also conducted with parents.
The School Counsellor's time allocation is based on the number of children at the school. At present our allocation is 2 days per week.
Text Books
A list of the appropriate books for each class will be sent home with each child at the start of term 1.
School Uniform
Roseville Primary has a strict dress code. All students are encouraged to wear full school uniform. We have a No Hat/No Play policy, which is rigidly enforced.
Summer uniform is worn in Terms 1 and 4, and winter uniform is worn in Terms 2 and 3, unless otherwise notified because of unseasonable weather.
Sports uniforms for years 4 to 6 are worn to school on Friday. Sport days for Kindergarten to Yr 3 vary and parents should check with the class teacher at the beginning of each year.
Uniforms can be purchased at the Clothing Pool. |
