Roseville - the Suburb
Roseville is a leafy suburb of
Sydney situated north of the city and just minutes from the busy CBD. Prior to
its establishment, Roseville was timbered with huge eucalyptus trees and settled
by Aboriginal people known as Ku-Ring-Gai. After European settlement, the land
was explored and eventually cleared for orchards. Several key pioneering
families moved into the area. One of the first, and most well-known was Richard
Archbold who acquired 400 acres known as “Clanville Estate” in 1823. With the
arrival of the railway in the late 1870s, larger landowners began to sub-divide
and people were encouraged to take up suburban residence in the tree-lined
streets. First Victorian, and later Edwardian houses sprung up in the streets
that were lit with gas lamps.
Just as was the case in past times, Roseville
is still a very desired address and real estate advertisements still describe it
as they did in 1911 as a pretty tree-adorned suburb…. just 6 miles from the city
and 20 minutes by train.
