T.O.M

Our 2 tournament of minds teams have both gone into the regional finals and one of our teams made it to the state finals. The maths engineering team made it through, now they are representing the Sydney North region. They will be given a challenge they must complete in 3 hours. This will take place in Canberra.

National Cross Country

On the 23rd of June Beth of 5/6R one of our senior students went to Geelong to run in the Nationals for Cross Country. Beth did extremely well. After being sick for the whole week. She came 5th in the race and was running with the fastest girls in all of Australia. That was a huge improvement from last year when she came 9th . Great Job Beth and your running skills. Good luck for next time!

Debating

This term many students have began debating with Mrs Harding. There has already been a debate. The students that were involved were Beth, Ellie, Mariel and Luke. Unfortunately they lost but those students had had no practice. The debate was against Hunters Hill at Hunters Hill Public School. The topic was books are better than television. The next debate is homework should be banned, with students Bridget, Alison, Kristen and Lauren At Roseville Public ( our school.) Good Luck to those students. Also Mariel, Kristen, Sylvia, Phoebe and Alison are all going to debating camp held at Narrabeen. Good luck to all the debaters.

The Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival commenced on Thursday 7th of August. The 800 meter sprint was first event. This year we had more competitors than we’ve had in a long time! The second event was 200 meters. We had almost the same number give or take a couple of people. The other event was 100 meter sprint followed by the finals and then the relays. All in all it was a great day!

Philosophy Club

This last year there has been a Philosophy Club. Cathy Banks (a mum at the school) has been running it every Wednesday. In the first term she was working with Years 5 and 6. In the second term she was working with Year 2 and this term she is working with 3 and 4.

State Cross Country

State Cross Country is coming up on the 25 of August in the first week back to school. This has been a great year in running because three people have made it through to the next round or state. Good luck to the state runners in the oncoming races.

Debating

Debating has started up again and Roseville has been doing an excellent job. Roseville have versed 4 other schools and only lost one debate. Roseville has one more debate and then they are off to the semi-finals. Good luck to the debating team for their upcoming debates.

Canteen Head Leaving

After almost 2 years in service to the canteen Mrs Cudicio will leave the canteen on Friday 4th of July. She has been an excellent canteen head and we will miss her. Good luck in your next position!

PSSA KNOCKOUTS

This week for the senior A’s soccer team played St Ives soccer team. It was a great match but in the end they won 5-1 our way. Good luck in the up coming matches.

Area Swimming

On Tuesday 8th March 8 Roseville students represented our school at the area swimming carnival. All 8 students-Matt, Oliver, James, Harry, Lachy, Aden, Maddy and Emma were great sports and tried their very best all day long. An extra congratulation goes to Matt who will now be competing in the state swimming championships. Well done everyone!

Concert Band

On Thursday the 3rd of April, Roseville Concert Band went to Lindfield Public School. The main idea was to see the differences the two bands had, also to see if the bands could work together. Roseville Public School played Lord of the Rings and Lindfield played Money Money. Together the bands played Disco Lives, Silent Movie and Clark County Celebration. Both bands made a lot of progress throughout the day. Good luck to the Concert band in the up coming competitions.

Tournament of Minds

In 2007 our Tournament of Minds Team was placed second in their division, Maths and Engineering, in the Australasian finals.

This was an outstanding achievement for the students, their coach & manager, and we congratulate them wholeheartedly: Dominic, Vincent , Evie, Fiona, Justin, Alison, Emily, their parent coach, Mrs McNamara and their teacher team manager, Mrs Chisholm.

Also of great excitement and pride was that our Team was awarded the ‘Spirit of the Tournament Award’. This award was given to the team in which every member consistently and constantly displayed the best team effort, encouragement, cooperation, responsibility and friendship towards each other and other teams involved in the competition. During the presentation of this award, the organisers of the Tournament acknowledged not just the positive and generous attitude and supportive behaviour of our students but also of their parents and families. Itwas wonderful that our Roseville ‘team’ had its community spirit acknowledged as it is this genuine generosity of spirit and collaboration that makes our school so special.

Robotics

In 2006 we had 40 students (mainly year 4 with a sprinkling from Years 5 & 6) combined into 10 teams - all competed in the NSW Junior RoboCup Challenge at the University of NSW. Each team had to program and develop a dance routine for their robot and themselves. Two of the teams were placed 2nd and 3rd in the state and 4 teams in all were asked back to take part in the finals.

Two of our teams went on to the National Championships and Congratulations to Isabel, Lilly, Emily and Evie who were awarde the National Engineers Encouragement Award.

School Bands

Congratulations to all the RPS bands. They have certainly kept up the RPS tradition with very credible performances in annual competitions. They competed in the NSW School Band Festival, the Ryde Eisteddfod, and In the McDonald's Challenge competition.

School bands have been a tradition at Roseville for many years. Perhaps this earlier Roseville Band may have enjoyed Band Camp as much as this year's band members. Our Band Committee are currently preparing for this year's band camp to be held on the last weekend in May. This year there is a Concert Band, a Senior Band, two Junior Bands and an Intermediate band. Two hundred students are involved in the band program. Parent helpers and organisers are invaluable and much appreciated. The Junior Bands are made up of Year 3 students, the Intermediate Band consists mainly of Year 4 students, the Senior Band has students from both Years 4, 5 and 6. and the Concert Band has students from Years 5 and 6.The Stage Band and Wind ensemble consist mainly Year 6. The bands perform both within and outside the school and compete in several competitions. The band program at RPS is considered to be one of the best junior band programs in Australia.

170+ students from Years 3 to 6 participate in our band programme which is one of the biggest and most successful in NSW. Many fine North Shore musicians got their start and developed a love of music and performance at Roseville Public School.

The Senior Band, Stage band and Wind Ensemble entertained parents and siblings at a family picnic recently.

In 2005 our bands had some special visitors. The US Seventh Fleet Band of the USS Blue Ridge conducted an amazing workshop with the Senior Band. After the workshop the school was treated to a fabulous concert which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, kids, teachers and parents. We were entertained by 20 of the navy's best musicians and we, and they had a ball. Many of our band members commented that the experience of playing with such high quality musicians was inspirational. Lieutenant Gerhardt complimented our band and our conductor, Todd Wynyard on the standard of musicianship. He said that they were not expecting to work with such talented young musicians and that the morning had been a real highlight of their tour.

Regional Bands

In 2006, our students will have the opportunity to join a Regional Primary School Band. This will provide further challenges for students who have already demonstrated exceptional aptitude and attitude in our school band programme. Students will need to remain active participants of our school band as a condition of membership. There will be a fee of $50 per term and students will be required to practise weekly at Wheeler Heights Public School as well as perform at statewide concerts throughout the year. Our School Captain, Melissa and Year 5 student, Sam sought and gained selection in the Metropolitan North Public School's Regional Band. They will perform in the Sydney North Music Festival.

Dance Groups

Our boys love to dance too...

Pictured below are recent boys and girls' dance groups.

Students playing chess

Chess

Chess is a popular lunch time activity with a number of students visiting the library at lunchtimes to challenge one another to a game. The school also has large outdoor pieces and and outdoor chess board.

NSW PSSA Knockout Competitions

Our Senior Boys Soccer team have been declared Sydney Noth CHampions having defeated Epping West Public School in a close match that went to extra time. The boys will travel to Deniliquin in the Riverina to play Deniliquin South Public School. The Senior Girls Softball team were defeated by 2004 nad 2005 state champions, Newport Public School. Our netballers were convincingly beaten by Newport Public School in the first round of the Netball Knockout. Our rugby team was defeated by Lindfield Public School in the first round of the Bryan Palmer Shield.

As well as participation in weekly PSSA sporting competition, a competition among the 12 local public schools RPS enters teams in the NSW PSSA knockout competitions. Our rugby and softball teans have enjoyed success in these competitions over recent years. This year our Senior Boys Soccer team is doing very well in the soccer knockout. In 2000 our rugby tean won all their matches to become the NSW champions. Our softball team is one of the strongest in NSW, unfortunately we often come up against another very strong team, Newport Primary in the early rounds of the competition. In the last two years we have been narrowly defeated by Newport...however there is always next year. The school has recently purchased a batting machine to help strengthen our batting. We are pretty serious about our sport at Roseville.
Local Sport Clubs and CompetitionsMany of our students participate in weekend sport and play with local clubs like Roseville Rugby Club, Roseville Netball Club, Davidson Softball Club, Roseville Cricket Club and Lindfield Soccer Club. For details and links to these and other sporting clubs and groups in our community, please follow this link to the Ku-ring-gai Council website.
